Among our members there are also several business projects that our supported by the COOP.

One of them is Blacksmith and toolsmith ANDREJ PEISKER, who has his workshop in Colos/ Odemira. As well as forging, he also works as a stove builder for wood and steel ovens in the region.

We’d like to introduce you to ANDREJ in an interview and photos on COOP’S PROJECT SITE!

A COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH MUTUAL SUPPORT CAN FLOURISH

“Joining the COOPERATIVA DA TERRA since September 2023 has been an enriching journey for me, motivated by a deep passion for preserving the blacksmith’s culture, which is unfortunately disappearing in the modern world. COOP’s setup, which houses several workshops under one roof, offers a collaborative environment where mutual support can thrive.

What attracted me most to the co-operative model was its spirit: it’s not just something for me, but also for others, allowing me to maintain my independence – a great balance from my perspective.

The workspace I now inhabit is exceptional. I’m thrilled to announce that another experienced locksmith will be joining this collaborative space, eager to devote himself to blacksmithing and also to realising more sophisticated projects.

MY VISION IS TO ENABLE PEOPLE TO MAKE THEIR OWN UTENSILS

In addition to my work, I hope to use this space to offer courses centred on older, traditional metalwork. My aim is to teach techniques that were normal before the big industrial machines, emphasising the importance of self-reliance and the preservation of human craftsmanship. In a world dominated by industrial production, many young people are unaware of how to create everyday objects themselves. For example, making jam at home has become a rarity. Many just go to the supermarket and buy it in jars.

My vision extends to empowering people to make their own utensils, from frying pans to knives. I firmly believe that if these skills are lost, we will become too dependent on technical installations, which I see as an unhealthy development. The next generation, although they know how to programme machines, often lack practical skills. One of the next steps is to improve my knowledge of Portuguese in order to teach the next generation correctly.

Essentially, joining the Co-operative is about following a vision of preserving traditions, fostering self-sufficiency and building a community that values the art of craftsmanship.”

Thanks for the interview Andrej!
